Giovanni is the eighth Gym leader in Kanto. Beating this leader earns the Earth Badge. The team has 5 Pokémon at level 80 to 120.

How to beat Giovanni

  • Types that hit the team hard: Water hits 5 of 5, Ice hits 5 of 5, Ground hits 4 of 5, Grass hits 3 of 5 for double damage or more.
  • Types that take the least from its moves: out of 20 damaging moves on the team: Ghost (immune to 15, none hit for double); Flying (immune to 5 and resists 5, none hit for double); Bug (resists 10, none hit for double).

Giovanni's levels never change, so the fight is the same for every player. If it is too hard, train up, change your moves to hit the types above, or swap a better matchup into the lead slot. Heal your team before you start. See status conditions for what poison, burn and sleep do mid-fight.

Before you go

  • Kanto is where every trainer starts. If you are somewhere else, buy a ticket at the Airport ($1,000,000).
  • You can fight any of the eight Kanto leaders first. The badge is only given on your first win against Giovanni.
