Pokemon Browser Games, and the One That Stands Out

A Pokemon browser game is a Pokemon game you play in a web browser, with nothing to download. Here's what that means, which ones are out there, and a full tour of the one that really stands out: Pokemon Dusk Reborn.

What is a Pokemon browser game?

You open a website, sign in and play. It works on a computer, tablet or phone, and there's no emulator, no ROM and no installer. Your progress is saved to your account online, so you can stop on one device and carry on from another. Pokemon browser games are made by fans, and they come in different flavours: battle simulators, roguelikes, tower defense, and full online RPGs where you catch, train and trade, like Pokemon Dusk Reborn.

If you're choosing one, a few things matter. Does it save your progress? Does it work on a phone? Are there other players to trade and battle with? Is there enough to do after the first hour? Pokemon Dusk Reborn says yes to all four, and the rest of this page shows how.

Which Pokemon browser games are there?

Look around and you'll find a handful to choose from: PokeRogue, Pokemon Showdown, Pokemon Vortex, Pokemon Tower Defense and a few more. Pokemon Dusk Reborn is the one that really stands out. It's free, it runs in a normal browser tab on a computer or phone, and it's a shared world with real trading, an Auction House, clans, 48 Gym badges and a long list of side activities. It has been running since 2016. Create a free Trainer whenever you're ready, or read on for the full tour.

Starting out

You pick a starter from eight regions, Kanto through Paldea, and Professor Oak sends you into a first fight against your rival, Ash. Beat him and the game hands over a field kit: ten Poke Balls, two Great Balls and an Ultra Ball. The opening is a short Trainer Journey in five chapters, and it explains battles, catching and teams as you go, so you don't need to read a manual first. If you'd like one anyway, here's how a first session goes.

Catching Pokemon

Then you walk. We went into the Safari Zone and a wild Iron Boulder at level 8 turned up almost straight away. Fights are turn-based: you weaken it with your moves (we used Ember), open your Backpack and throw a ball. Knocking it out doesn't count as a catch, which keeps it tense.

Our first Poke Ball missed. The second one worked, and the game sent Iron Boulder to our Pokemon Box and nudged us to add it to the team.

Your team and your Box

Six Pokemon fight alongside you at a time. Everything else waits in your Pokemon Box, where you can evolve Pokemon, change their moves, give them nicknames and search by letter. The Box also has filters for variants such as Shiny, Shadow, Haunted, Golden and Mega, and the game has a lot of them. The Pokedex entry for Pikachu alone shows ten in-game variants, and the public Pokedex is open to anyone.

A long road ahead

The main path has 48 Gym badges across six regions: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos, with eight Gyms each. You can battle regular Trainers and other players, and the Battle Towers give you daily score runs with prizes. Each tower has its own Pokemon and daily reset, so there's always something to go for once the badges are done.

Trading, the Auction House and clans

This is the part that makes it feel like a world instead of a single-player game. You can trade a Pokemon straight to another Trainer, or use Wonder Trade to swap with someone else online. The Auction House lets you bid on Pokemon or put your own up for sale (a 5% fee applies when one sells for over 5,000 coins). The Item Marketplace is where players buy and sell items for coins. Clans give you a group to belong to, and there's a friends list, a chatroom, and leaderboards for top Trainers, Pokemon and coins.

When you want a break from battling

There's plenty to do that isn't a fight. Team Rocket's Games Corner has a daily raffle, slots, a flip coin game, hangman, a scrambler and a few odder things. The Dusk Mines let you spend energy on mining routes for gems and fossils, and deeper routes unlock as your mining level rises. Oak's collection tasks, a lab where you hatch eggs, a Bug Hunt contest and Rotom's Spin the Wheel fill in the rest, and you can fish, buy an estate and grow Berries.

Events, guides and the community

Events come and go. The Halloween event this year had daily missions from the Old Witch, candies to earn and chests to buy in the Witch Shop. New players can also lean on the forums, the official game guides and our Discord, where most of the day-to-day chat happens.

On a phone or tablet

It runs in the browser on a phone too. A bar along the bottom gives you Home, Map, Battle, PokeBox, Items and More, and maps have a full-screen mode with an on-screen D-pad if the small view feels cramped. There's more in our full-screen map write-up, and the Pokemon browser game page covers what you need to play.

The honest bit

The game has been running since 2016, and some of it still shows. The trade form, for one, is a couple of boxes and a button. It's a fan project, not an official game. The Shop sells optional supporter items that help pay for hosting. You can play without them, but they're there. If you want something polished and short, other Pokemon browser games may suit you better. If you want a place with other players, an economy and a long list of things to chase, this is what we built it for.

Questions people ask

Yes. Pokemon Dusk Reborn runs in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on a computer, phone or tablet. You make a free account, and your Trainer is saved so you can carry on from another device.

Are Pokemon browser games official?

No. Pokemon browser games are fan projects. Ours isn't made or endorsed by Nintendo, Creatures Inc. or Game Freak. Whatever you play, use a password you don't use anywhere else, and don't install a "launcher" for a game that says it runs in your browser.
