How to evolve Pokemon in Dusk Reborn
Reaching the right level only unlocks an evolution. You still have to open the Evolve Pokémon page and confirm it yourself.
Evolve a Pokémon step by step
- Open the Pokémon you want to evolve. On its page, the Manage Pokemon tabs are Evolve Pokemon, Equip Starter, Open Box, Change Moves and Nicknames. Choose Evolve Pokemon.
- Read the table. Its columns are Level Required, Happiness Required, Item Required and Evolves To. The Happiness column always shows a dash, because this game does not track friendship.
- If the Pokémon has more than one evolution, each one is its own row. Pick the row you want.
- Press Evolve Pokemon. If the button says N/A, that evolution is not available to this Pokémon yet.
- A short animation plays, then the Pokémon's name and stats update.
Hitting the level does not evolve anything by itself. A Pokémon can sit at the right level for as long as you like until you confirm.

- The Evolve Pokemon tab, highlighted because you are on it.
- The column headings. This Eevee has no level requirement, so every Level Required cell shows a dash.
- The button for the Vaporeon row. Each row has its own button and needs its own item.
Item evolutions: hold the item first
Putting a Water Stone in your Backpack is not enough. Equip it on the Pokémon first, then open Evolve Pokémon and choose the evolution you want. The item is used up when the evolution succeeds, and it stays in place if the evolution is rejected. Mega Evolution works the same way with a Mega Stone.
Evolution stones include the Thunderstone, Fire Stone, Water Stone, Leaf Stone, Moon Stone, Sun Stone, Shiny Stone, Dusk Stone and Dawn Stone. Items such as Metal Coat, King's Rock and Razor Claw work the same way. See all evolution items.
If the evolution is rejected
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| Your Pokémon doesn't meet the level requirement to evolve. | Train it to the number in the Level Required column. |
| You need to have a (item) equipped to your (Pokémon) to evolve. | Equip that item on this Pokémon. It has to be held, not just in your Backpack. |
| Your Pokémon must be male (or female) to evolve into (Pokémon). | That evolution checks gender. A male Kirlia holding a Dawn Stone evolves differently from a female one. |
| This evolution can only occur at night (or during the day). | Come back at the right time. The check uses the server clock, not your local one. |
| You cannot evolve a LOANED Pokémon! | Wait until it is no longer on loan. |
| Your (Pokémon) doesn't have any valid evolutions. | It has no evolution in this game, or you opened the page for a different Pokémon than you meant to. |
Three worked examples
- Level evolution: a Charmander needs no item. Train it until it reaches the level in the Level Required column, open Evolve Pokémon, choose Charmeleon and press Evolve Pokemon.
- Item evolution: to turn an Eevee into Vaporeon, equip a Water Stone on it, open Evolve Pokémon, choose the Vaporeon row and confirm. The stone is gone afterwards.
- Mega Evolution: equip a Mega Stone on an eligible Pokémon and evolve it from the same page.
Eevee's eight evolutions
| Evolution | What it needs |
|---|---|
| Vaporeon | Water Stone |
| Jolteon | Thunderstone |
| Flareon | Fire Stone |
| Leafeon | Leaf Stone |
| Glaceon | Ice Stone |
| Espeon | Sun Shard, by day |
| Umbreon | Moon Shard, by night |
| Sylveon | Fairy Shard |
Ice Stone, Sun Shard, Moon Shard and Fairy Shard drop from maps and from the Lucky Dip in Dusknoir's Haunted Ground. All eight evolutions are tied to the exact species name Eevee, so a Shiny or Colored Eevee currently has no evolution available.
Variants
Shiny, Shadow, Golden, Demon, Frost, Glitter, Eternal, Haunted and Baby Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve, but ordinary level-up evolution still works for them: a Shiny Charmander evolves into a Shiny Charmeleon the same way the normal line does.
How it differs from the main games
- You choose and confirm. Nothing evolves on its own at a level-up.
- No trade evolution. Onix, Scyther, Seadra, Slowpoke, Rhydon and similar Pokémon evolve by holding the usual item, with no trade.
- No friendship evolution. Chansey to Blissey is unavailable for that reason, and Espeon, Umbreon and Sylveon use dedicated items.
