Open any of your Pokemon and select Evolve Pokemon. Every evolution path currently available to that Pokemon shows up as its own row -- pick the one you want and confirm. This guide covers every way a Pokemon can actually evolve in Dusk Reborn, including where it differs from the mainline games.

Level-up evolution

Most Pokemon evolve automatically once they reach the right level -- no item needed. This is the majority of evolutions in the game.

Stone and item evolution

Some Pokemon need a specific item held (equipped) on them, not just sitting in your Backpack. Equip the item on that Pokemon first, then open Evolve Pokemon -- the item is used up automatically the moment it evolves.

Several less common held items also unlock specific evolutions the same way -- Metal Coat, King's Rock, Oval Stone, Razor Claw, Razor Fang, and a handful of others.

Gender and time-of-day evolutions

A small number of evolutions also check your Pokemon's gender or the current server time alongside a held item -- for example, a male Kirlia holding a Dawn Stone evolves differently than a female one, and a couple of evolutions only trigger at night by the server clock.

Mega Evolution

Works exactly like a stone evolution: hold a Mega Stone on an eligible Pokemon and evolve it from the same Evolve Pokemon screen.

How evolutions here differ from the mainline games

  • No trade evolution. Classic trade-evolution Pokemon (Onix, Scyther, Seadra, Slowpoke, Rhydon, Porygon, Electabuzz, Magmar, and others) evolve here by holding the usual item and evolving directly -- no trading required.
  • No friendship/happiness evolution. Espeon, Umbreon, and Sylveon are not obtainable through Evolve Pokemon at all, since this game does not track Pokemon friendship. Chansey to Blissey is unavailable for the same reason.
  • Glaceon is also unavailable here -- Eevee's obtainable evolutions on this page are Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, and Leafeon only.

A loaned Pokemon cannot be evolved until it is no longer on loan.

Pokemon Team and Box guide

Guide reflects the evolution system as of October 2026.

Step-by-step: evolving a Pokemon

  • Open Evolve Pokemon. It loads your active (slot 1) Pokemon by default.
  • Want a different one? Pick it from your team or box first, the page always evolves whichever Pokemon you are currently viewing.
  • If a path needs a held item, equip that item on the Pokemon first. The page only shows and accepts evolutions your Pokemon is already eligible for right now.
  • Every evolution path currently available shows up as its own row. Pick the one you want and confirm.
  • You will get a short sprite-swap animation, then the Pokemon's name and stats update immediately.
  • Nothing showing up? Your Pokemon either has not hit the level requirement yet, or has no evolution available to it in this game.

A visual example: Charmander's full line

Charmander Charmeleon Charizard Mega Charizard

Charmander to Charmeleon to Charizard are both plain level-up evolutions, no item needed. Charizard to Mega Charizard needs a Mega Stone Mega Stone held on it.

Colored and Shiny Pokemon follow a couple of extra rules

A Shiny, Shadow, Golden, Demon, Frost, Glitter, Eternal, Haunted or Baby Pokemon cannot Mega Evolve, even when the normal version of that species can. Ordinary level-up evolution still works for them though: a Shiny Charmander evolves into a Shiny Charmeleon the exact same way the normal line does.

Eevee is a specific exception worth knowing before you spend a Colored Treasure Box on one. All of Eevee's evolutions (Jolteon, Flareon, Vaporeon, Leafeon) are stone evolutions tied to the exact name "Eevee", so a Shiny or Colored Eevee currently has no evolution available to it at all on this page.

Shiny Eevee

See the Colored and Shiny Pokemon Guide for where these variants actually come from.
