Map Guide (Updated)
Since the old Map Guide is severely outdated and lacking information, here's a new and improved one.

How do maps work?

Each map has three pokemon types assigned to them, and every hour randomly pulls 10 pokemon to appear on the map, corresponding to the map types. This type can be either the primary type or the secondary type of the pokemon for it to have a chance of appearing. Meaning an Ice-Psychic type pokemon can appear on any map with either Ice or Psychic assigned to it.

In addition to the 10 random pokemon, each map also has two regular pokemon and one legendary that are always roaming the map. These two regular pokemon that are constantly around, don't appear on the Map Route Guide that you can find next to each map. This book guide shows you what pokemon are currently roaming the map, and it updates hourly when new pokemon are chosen.

The one exception to this is the Black Forest map, which has Bellsprout always taking the first "random" pokemon spot, meaning in essence that there's three regular pokemon that are always around, and only 9 truly random pokemon.

The level of the encountered pokemon is based on the highest level pokemon in your party plus minus 5 levels, but capped at 5 and 100. Meaning if you're looking for a level 5 pokemon, having only level 5 pokemon in your party gives the best odds, since the map pokemon can only be level 5-10 in that case. On the other end of the spectrum, even if you have a level 160,000 pokemon in your party, you'll still only run into level 95-100 pokemon because of the cap. Legendaries are exempt from this, those will always be level 200-250.

One thing to keep in mind when you're hunting for legendaries, is that some of them can also appear as one of the ten random pokemon, and you can catch them with normal balls when that happens.

Unowns can be found everywhere at all times, thus they're not included on the list.

Since it's kinda related, here's how many balls it takes on average to catch a pokemon.
Poké Ball: 2.37 (average cost per pokemon = $355.5)
Great Ball: 2.27 (average cost per pokemon = $11,350)
Ultra Ball: 2.02 (average cost per pokemon = $20,200)
Based on data collected by me (about 2k catches), your results may slightly vary.
Do what you will with this info 🤷🏻‍♂️
